Skippable footage of MW2 sparks outrage in Australia

October 31st, 2009

mw2The skippable scene of terrorist atrocities shown in the leaked footage of Modern Warfare 2 on YouTube was disturbing. Australian Council on Children and the Media called for MW2’s MA15+ to be reconsidered. They may actively ban it from the sale.

Jane Roberts of Australian Council on Children and the Media said in this regard, “The consequences of terrorism are just abhorrent in our community and yet here we are a product that’s meant to be passed off as a leisure time activity, actually promoting what most world leaders speak out publicly against.”

Let us check what was the report filed in regard of the offending scene by the Classification Board that accompanied the MA15+ rating decision: “Several civilians are shot with blood burst wounds, civilian corpses are strewn across the airport floor, often in stylized pools of blood, injured civilians crawl away with lengthy blood trails behind them.”

In this regard Activision released a statement saying that it was “meant to evoke the atrocities of terrorism.”

Don’t flame me but i wouldn’t blame em. People say it’s just a game and it’s no big deal but our soldiers fight every day against these same people and taking the game’s war to the home front is way too far. Especially when you play as the terrorist and the white house and washington monument are being destroyed. They didn’t need to go that far with the plot line to make it interesting. I’m buying the game, but it seems like it’s gonna end up being really disrespectful.

Activision’s statement is bull. If they wanted to show why terrorists are so bad they wouldn’t simulate an attack on Washington where they turn the player into a terrorist. If you’re gonna go that far then don’t deny it. I hope they lose their market in Australia.

You can skip this scene if you want – (revealed by Infinity Ward.)

What’s the big issue – THE GAME SHOWS WHAT REAL WAR IS LIKE! IT’S CALLED REALISM!

If these cases that they stated that offended them were portrayed in film (which these days is a common element), then they would not be so outraged as it is such a common element in film.
This game has been made for entertainment purposes, and to give the impact of what war really is like, so instead of sitting on their high horse, and give us bullshit like “this game being too violent and to confronting”, then maybe they should do something better with their time, and do something about the REAL war.

The problem is that no one wants to take responsibility. Parents should view the content being given to children even if it is Mario party. If they don’t have time then they Shouldnt rely on someone elses opinion. That being said, everyone should understand that this game only DEPICTS real life situations. They should look on in horror because it is a terrible thing and thank God himself that they don’t have to see it in real life. Everyone viewing it should come away with something. I myself have even more respect for our armed forces who deal with this and other atrocities like it.

Wow… so you can do it in movies but not in video game? I really can’t see why this is such a big of a deal..

Its a game… I’m sure people who want to buy it know what its about, if it offends people, they don’t buy it, simple as that.

Just because Jane Roberts doesn’t like it, it doesn’t mean that everybody else has to suffer..

    sad and pathetic times…

Why is the game rated differently across the planet? UK version is 18+ so kids should not be able to get/see it?

As an over 18 i will make the decision to watch/play, not some jumped up politician

you know what, if you dont want to see it, then dont freaking watch it… christ… no one complains about all the shit in movies and what not. in most countries, the game’s rated for 18+ so big deal that they might have to do what the rest of the world is in terms of ratings. it’s a game with simulated blood, omg freak out.

and i have the utmost respect for soldiers accross the world and what they do and have to endure. they know now what’s in the game. if they dont want to see it, they can skip over it

Then Australia should ban action movies! I hope they dont watch 24 because if I can recall, the last season was brought to the White House…WTF its just a game! What they need to focus on is PARENTAL GUIDANCE! The parents should know WTF there kids are watching and or playing.

@Like I actually want to make a cool nam

Let’s be serious here.. those that go to war choose to go to war, just like people choose to play the game. Like a few people have said; their are alot of people out there that are sensetive to small things. If they were sensetive to this idea of terrorist they wouldnt be at work with eachother.. terrorist are provoked.. and created by the means of war.. think about it logicaly for a second. Beside’s you don’t need stuff like video games to give you ideas on how to kill someone, etc.. think before TVs’ pcs, and consols existed. we still had serial killers, murders and terrorists.

If everyone is so against terrorism, ban religion instead as that is one of the biggest roots of terrorism… not a simple game just because it shows how badly it can effect people across the world.

    Australian here…

It’s pathetic that the government plays ads at dinner time which try to warn of smoking by zooming in on a surgical procedure of cutting open a heart or whatever it is… But my point is that there is a lot worse out there.. what’s the difference from buying an MA rated game to an MA rated movie?

    Fine, just a game?
Let’s make a game where you fly planes into buildings, and see how much terror you can cause.
And then let’s make another game where you rape women and piss on them and murder them when your through.
And then let’s make a game, where I take my dick and fuck your mom’s asshole till she bleeds and then slit her throat.

It’s not just a game you imbeciles. It’s a reflection of society. And its going straight to hell.

lets face it, some of the imagery is horrific. I think whats needed is 18+ rating. not bans. Adults play too!MW2 Aus Modern warfare 2 Australia FTW!
